At the London Centre for Book Arts last night I found myself rubbing shoulders with website editors and primary school teachers as we came face to face with traditional hot metal and wooden letterpress type. The three hour workshop gave everyone in the small group the chance to set a single line of metal type and their own composition of wooden letter forms. Getting hands on with such an authentic, traditional printing technique was great fun and a refreshing break from the daily digital equivalent. The guys at LCBA are clearly passionate about their work in restoring, preserving and teaching all elements of book arts. I wish them every success and look forward to attending my next workshop soon! You can find out more here.

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but also to take advantage of a dozen special offers for BBC employees, courtesy of this year’s Christmas campaign from BBC Club. Premm have produced a mini 26-page concertina leaflet with details of each promotion in the ‘Christmas jumper’ style adopted for the campaign. Posters and menus have also been created to encourage BBC Club members to get involved during December!

The upper lips of the male contingent of Premm Design collectively participated in Movember this year. Those of us with normally hair-free faces joined with those who usually sport some degree of facial furniture to grow the obligatory moustache for the month in our efforts to promote the charity’s work, raising awareness around male health issues. So far the Premm MoBro Posse total stands at over £150 and we hope that will increase to over £200 once all the promised generous donations have come in. uk.movember.com

Following our successful appointment to The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) design framework (as featured in Design Week Fri, 27 Apr 2012), I was fortunate enough to be invited along to a walking tour of the Olympic Park. It provided me with a valuable insight into the LLDC’s intentions for the future of the park beyond the Olympics and Paralympics and it was a real privilege to be able to walk around the site so close to the games beginning. We look forward to helping the LLDC with their exciting plans for the park.

It was an absolute privilege for myself and Martin to be present at yesterday’s The Prince’s Trust and L’Oreal Paris Celebrate Success Awards at the Odeon, Leicester Square. The Awards recognise young people’s success in education, skills development, employment, enterprise and in the community. In the presence of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, hosted by Ant & Dec and with many of the charity’s celebrity ambassadors in attendance this event was joyful, inspiring and humbling in equal measure. International Confex 2012 is currently on at ExCel London, with branding by Premm. Following a successful pitch in June 2011, we went on to produce a new logo and creative brand visual for this prestigious gathering of event-related organisations. Our varied remit ranged from direct influence on the look and feel of the website, production of event collateral, press advertising and HTML email templates, to the provision of our artwork files to enable UBM Live to apply the branding throughout the event space itself. International Confex will run between 6 and 8 March, find out more at international-confex.com

I was lucky enough to attend the E-motional Type lecture at the British Library last night, the final event of their Spring Festival. It was a rare opportunity to hear from FUSE legends Neville Brody and Jon Wozencroft, along with Adrian Shaughnessy, Jonathan Barnbrook and Teal Triggs. Each speaker was given ten minutes (ish) to make their presentation on the role of type and visual language. I thought the format was a great success, with a wide variety of topics covered; from the experimental work of Brody & Wozencroft (celebrated in their special boxed set of FUSE 1-20), to the thought-provoking projects of Barnbrook, the passionate feminism of Triggs and the quick-witted commentary of Shaughnessy. Just my ‘type’ of evening!

The Designs of the Year 2012 show is now on at the Design Museum, with a huge variety of work on display from a wide range of design disciplines. I will definitely making a trip down to the museum to check it out, not least to get a peek at a reject slab from Gordon Young and Why Not Associates’ Comedy Carpet installation. I have been a fan of this piece since first coming across it in last October’s issue of Creative Review and have recently got hold of a copy of the companion guide book (pictured) – I think it is a great marriage of typographic design and engineering ingenuity. So until I can come up with a reason to go to Blackpool, the exhibition is going to be the closest I can get! Find out more at comedycarpet.com

Marie Stopes Sierra Leone (MSSL) has been providing high quality reproductive/sexual health services to Sierra Leoneans for 25 years. These bus side adverts are intended to encourage sexually active women and their partners to visit the MSSL outreach centers for contraception, advice and other services. The bus adverts project is one of a number of recent pieces of work that Premm have produced for Marie Stopes International (MSI), including a corporate folder, 2012 desk calendar and emergency toolkit pdf brochure.
