The Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge is one of the most well-respected collegiate choirs in the world. Founded in the 1670s, it is known for its rich, warm sound, and is proud of its relaxed and supportive atmosphere. In conjunction with Signum Classics, the choir planned to launch a new label to release their recordings, as well as music from college members and alumni. This new label needed a cohesive identity to work across all releases. We developed a clean, distinctive logo depicting the Bridge of Sighs silhouette at its heart. This iconic crossing over the River Cam is an image inextricably linked with the College. The bridge stands proud in ‘blazing red’, a nod to the distinctive red blazers worn at the College. To bring a coherence to the collection, each cover combines the logo with photographs or illustrations of circular subjects, carefully selected to hint at the music to be discovered inside.

The circular images are inspired by recording formats and to reflect the shape of the bridge. Overtime this distinctive look forms an increasingly recognisable series.

“Listening in, the individual vocal strength of various singers, particularly in the back rows, came as no surprise.”
