St John’s College, University of Cambridge, appointed us to design the branding for their record label (launched in partnership with Signum Classics). The St John’s Cambridge label releases recordings by the internationally-renowned Choir of St John’s Cambridge, and students and alumni of St John’s College, one of the oldest and largest colleges in the university. The logo we created depicts the Bridge of Sighs, an iconic crossing over the River Cam at St John’s and an image inextricably linked with the College. This is rendered in ‘blazing red’ (the word ‘blazer’ is derived from the College’s distinctive red jackets). On record covers, the logo and typography are combined with photographs or illustrations of circular subjects, carefully chosen to link with the music. The circular images are inspired by recording formats (vinyl, CD etc.) and the shape of the bridge, and form an increasingly recognisable series.

“Listening in, the individual vocal strength of various singers, particularly in the back rows, came as no surprise – John’s have long been a powerful crew – nor did Nethsingha’s skill in blending them so immaculately.”
